Aim

Computational design can be exploited to infuse behavioral qualities of material systems directly in the design medium, thus transcend the limits of simple representation and/or one-way parametric control, and using forces in a twofold way: harness embedded performance rationales (structural, thermal, etc.) and incorporating those behaviors as operating procedures that keep the design in an active state, progressively achieving stability through iterative human-software dialog. This results in increasing levels of resolution that remap the traditional tectonic hierarchies infusing them throughout several system scales.

Participants will learn how to interweave intuitively simple 3D modeling operations with strategies for parametric control of the model’s geometry through Rhinoceros 3D and Grasshopper, simulating material systems and forces with the help of its plugins Kangaroo and Millipede.

WORKSHOP PLAN

DAY 1 session

9.30 am – 8 pm with coffee and breaks

  • introductory lecture “Embodied Forces”
  • fast-track introduction to Rhinoceros, Grasshopper and the design workflow
  • Rhinoceros 3D (modeling)
  • Grasshopper (parametrization)
  • Kangaroo + Millipede (material and forces simulation)  
  • how one step enables and influences the others in a non-linear process    modeling  < >  parametrizing  < >  simulating

  • In depth workflow of strategies for parametric control of the model’s geometry
  • free play/practice with the workflow and group formation

DAY 2 session

9.30 am – 8.00 pm with coffee and breaks

  • Tutorized work on the project .

The resulting object (the design for a pavilion/sculpture) will then emerge as an embodiment of forces that play at a metabolic level, in search of the maximum possible articulated richness and complexity that the design medium allows

  • Certification : all participants will receive an official certificate of attendance
  • Credits : The workshops received CFU‎ credits for architecture students from  University of Florence . Department of Architecture    –    The workshops received  16 CFP credits for professionals  Architects
